class of the 1960's

This is a typical class at Swain House Infants School taken in the 1960's. Note on the wall in the brackground is a display of the Initial Teaching Alphabet (I.T.A.), this kind of reading was used at certain infant schools throughout the 1960's and the early 1970's.

  1. I remember learning to read with ITA in the late 60’s. When I trained as an infants teacher 20 years later we still studied its use although it had fallen out of favour in schools by then
